Environmental concerns will motivate both young and older members of the community to form stronger bonds when Peabody Trust’s Willow Tree Lane Estate in Yeading ''goes potty'' on Saturday 3 May, from 11.30am-2pm.
More than 80 Peabody Trust residents and staff, local councillors and police will use their green thumbs to pot 600 plants in a combined effort to make the Hillingdon estate greener.
Then, after a day full of sustainable fun, each participant will take home their potted plant for a period of two months. Come July and the decision will be made as to who has looked after their plant the best. Prizes will be awarded to three different age groups- one to five years (parental help allowed), five to 16 years, and 16 years plus.
The event has been organised by the Resident’s Association on the estate, as a follow-up to last year’s successful turnout.
Chair of the Resident Association, Fahira Mulamehic said: "The point of this event is to engage the community in fun activities that have a positive purpose. We hope to raise the awareness of environmental issues and encourage residents to do their bit to make their estate a better place to live."
"It is not just about planting- it is about community spirit. The day will bring residents, both young and old, together. We hope it will encourage people from different backgrounds to learn about each other and break down any barriers that exist."
Greenscene donated half the plants and the Residents Association purchased the remainder. Peabody Trust arranged the donation in support of the event.
Peabody Trust estate manager, Sarah Soal said: "This event is a great example of a resident-led initiative. Having the residents themselves organise such a day will create a stronger sense of harmony between the many different people on the estate and install a greater sense of ownership and pride."
