U.S. Ambassador Robert H. Tuttle met with Peabody Trust’s Board of Governors and a group of leading specialists on health, housing and urban poverty at the Ambassador’s Regent’s Park residence, Winfield House, yesterday to set the scene for Peabody’s 21st century project.
Chief Executive Stephen Howlett said: "Peabody is embarking on a research project with its residents that will define an exemplar Peabody community in the 21st century. Our estates should be a place of pride, offering a quality home and living environment that matches residents’ aspirations as far as possible."
The findings will influence the way Peabody allocates resources, manages estates and communicates with residents.
Research Director of the Brookings Metropolitan Policy Programme, Alan Berube, set out the challenges of tackling urban poverty in America. Chris Holmes, Director of Housing for Camden Council and former director of the homeless charity Shelter, responded with the particular issues facing the UK.
Among the well-known guests who took part in this morning’s discussion were Chief Executive of the London Development Agency, Manny Lewis; Director of Housing Strategy and Support at the Department of Communities for Local Government, Terrie Alafat; London Councillor Jamie Carswell and Director of the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, Julia Unwin.
This was Ambassador Tuttle’s first meeting with Peabody’s Board of Governors since his appointment as Honorary President of the Trust.
