The more famous local flower show in Chelsea may be long gone for this year but one Chelsea garden blooms on, thanks to a group of residents at a housing estate in Westminster.
Residents of the Peabody Trust Grosvenor estate have ensured that their homes are in full bloom this summer after securing £25,000 in funding.
The 'Grosvenor Gardeners' applied with the Peabody Trust to the Living Spaces fund for a grant to spruce up their estate and were delighted when the money was awarded.
The Grosvenor Gardeners – a group of eight residents - already run two roof gardens on the estate, which was constructed in the late 19th Century. Now this cash boost has meant new flower beds have been put in and hanging baskets for residents to admire in the courtyards.
Peabody Trust supported residents in their application and oversaw the installation of the flowerbeds and baskets with input from residents.
"This is a straightforward way in which social housing can be improved to enhance and benefit the local community," said Mathew Frith, Peabody's landscape and regeneration manager and co-author of Decent Homes, Decent Spaces: a report which highlights the importance of green spaces in and around social housing.
"Thriving communities are at the heart of our housing and regeneration projects. Our residents value the trees and gardens of our estates and appreciate the contact with the natural world that this provides."
