S.Age (Senior Age), a group of volunteers from Peabody’s Sundial Centre, were awarded Volunteer Group of 2009 at a special event held by Peabody to thank volunteers across London for their outstanding contributions.
The group received the award in recognition of their work to improve the lives of older people living in Tower Hamlets. Members of the group organise day trips, fundraising, social events and activities for older people in their community.
S.Age volunteer Vince Felice said:
‘After I retired I had no idea what I would do next, but volunteering has given me a reason to wake up in the morning. I’m doing things now I would have never done before, taking creative writing classes, photography lessons and making so many friends. It’s a lifeline, especially for older people like me.’
Sundial Centre manager Surjit Powers said:
‘We’re so delighted that S.Age have received this award. Their volunteer work has helped break down barriers between generations and improved the lives of countless people living in Tower Hamlets.’

Notes for editors
- Peabody was established in 1862 and is now one of London’s oldest and largest housing associations, providing affordable homes to over 50,000 Londoners. Peabody’s mission is to make London a city of opportunity for all by ensuring as many people as possible have a good home, a real sense of purpose and a strong feeling of belonging.
- Located in the heart of Tower Hamlets, the Sundial Centre promotes good health and tackles isolation. One of six community centres in London run by Peabody, it provides a wide range of services, particularly for people aged over 50 years old. Services include a resource centre for activity sessions, employment and learning support in subjects such as basic maths and literacy, a community kitchen and cafe, and daycare for older residents. The centre also plays a lead role in LinkAge Plus, a community project to promote the wellbeing of older people in Tower Hamlets.
