Press release: Residents invited to have their say about Pembury development plans

Press release date: 28 July 2010

Local residents are invited to a public exhibition on Wednesday 11th, Thursday 12th and Saturday 14th August to have their say on plans to regenerate an area of Pembury estate with new homes, shops and community facilities.

The regeneration plans, which centre on the prominent Pembury Circus area of the estate, have been developed by Peabody and Bellway Homes, one of the largest housebuilders in the country, with local residents.

Long earmarked for regeneration, Pembury Circus is located on the corner of Pembury Road and Dalston Lane. It has been disused since two blocks of bedsits and an underground car park on the site, a constant source of antisocial behaviour and criminal activity, were demolished in 2005.

The plans for Pembury Circus will complete a programme of regeneration that began when Peabody acquired Pembury estate from Hackney Council in March 2000. So far Peabody has invested more than £75 million improving the estate.

Bellway Homes was selected as Peabody’s preferred developer after a process involving a Resident Design Panel consisting of nominated members from the Pembury Estate Tenants and Residents Association (PETRA).

Neil Jervis, Principal Development Manager for Peabody, said:

“This is a fantastic opportunity to provide new homes, community facilities and amenities for local residents. This project represents the last phase in a regeneration programme that has made a massive difference to Pembury estate over the last 10 years.”

Ian Gorst, Land Director for Bellway Homes, added:

“We are delighted to have been chosen to partner Peabody on this exciting project and are keen to get local people’s views on our proposals before any application is submitted. All the feedback we receive over the next few weeks will help us in designing the final plans.”

The public exhibition will be held on Pembury estate at the Senior Citizens Centre between 4pm and 8pm on Wednesday 11th and Thursday 12th August and between 10am and 4pm on Saturday 14th August. Members of the development team from Peabody and Bellway Homes will be on hand to answer questions and talk people through the plans.
