Arts Cellar

Peabody has secured funding from the Department of Innovation, Universities and Skills, Transformation Fund, which aims to help deliver informal adult learning. The Arts Cellar project will launch in December 2009 and will run until March 2010.

The aim of the fund is to support projects that enable adults over 19 years to participate in informal learning. These projects are non-vocational and don’t necessarily lead to gaining a qualification, but do allow individuals to expand their opportunities and skills, increasing their chances of moving onto further training or employment.

The project will be begin at Bruce House centre in January 2010. The programme of arts activities will include:

  • drawing
  • painting
  • music making - learning instruments and producing music digitally
  • digital arts
  • theatre skills (including drama, costume making)
  • creative writing
  • crafts
  • poetry
  • information about local history

Professional staff will be employed to deliver the activities, and the aim is to get local adults, who have previously not engaged in learning, to either pass on their skills or learn new ones.

Part of the project is to also try and encourage volunteers and Peabody residents, who have art-related skills/qualifications, to join the project. They will be able to pass on their knowledge and run activities across our estates. Volunteers will be given the tools and support by Peabody staff to offer informal teaching.

A steering group for the project will also be established, which will in turn contribute to the programme the Arts Cellar offers.
