Buying options

Right to acquire

The Right to Acquire scheme allows eligible housing association tenants to buy the home they currently rent. It does not apply to tenants of local authorities, who may be eligible to buy under the Preserved Right to Buy.

The scheme is for secure tenants who live in a home either built or purchased by a registered social landlord and funded by the Housing Corporation through social housing grant on or after 1 April 1997.

To qualify, you must:

  • have been a housing association tenant for a total of two years (or five years if your first tenancy was created on or after January 18, 2005)
  • live in a house or flat which is a self contained property and is your only or main home

To apply, complete a right to acquire claim form (pdf, file size 469KB )and send it to Peabody head office for the attention of the sales and marketing team (keep a copy of the completed form).

We will then confirm whether you have the Right to Acquire and, if you are eligible, explain the next steps in buying your home.
