Older people services

"Through my volunteering I’ve become more confident and more independent."

Older people are matched with volunteer "befrienders", who can offer companionship and help with everyday living. The befrienders visit the older people in their homes once a week and offer advice on various aspects of healthy living.

Rosemary joined the Well Met befriending scheme in 2008. Since then she has befriended four people, visiting them regularly and occasionally accompanying them on trips out.

"I heard about the scheme through a friend," says Rosemary, who lives in Wandsworth with her 16-year-old son. "I'd just been made redundant and I was looking for something to do."

Rosemary now works three days a week in a care home and on Fridays she visits Beryl, in her seventies, who is registered blind and lives in Balham, in South West London.

"I go on Fridays from 2pm till 4pm," says Rosemary. "Sometimes Beryl asks me to do things for her like hang out her washing or open her mail. Occasionally I’ll cook something for her, and often we’ll just sit and chat. We've got lots in common."

Rosemary has taken part in several training courses to help with her volunteering work.

"The induction training on older people’s needs has really helped in my job and with my elderly mum, too. I started thinking differently about her and the people I work with. I now make sure I speak more clearly as many older people have hearing problems."

Rosemary says she also feels better about herself. "Through my volunteering I’ve become more confident and more independent," she says. "Now my son wants to do it!"

Rosemary’s achievements were recognized when she received the Peabody Volunteer of the Year Award in the 'Supporting People' category in 2011.
